More Than Just Hockey
Bristol Ladies Hockey Club has been bringing women's hockey to North Bristol since the 1990s.
We started with three teams training at Failand and, like many clubs, had our fair share of cliques, power struggles and drama.
Back in the 90s we were swinging wooden sticks around, heavy, temperamental, and about as forgiving as they sound , and every match seemed to grind to a halt over an offside decision. Half the game was spent standing around waiting for someone to take a hit. If the ball went out for a long corner, you'd all trudge over, line up, and wait patiently while the defence built a wall in front of you. Thrilling stuff.
A lot has changed since then.
Today we're a single-squad club, and we're proud of that. We're competitive and always looking to improve, but we do it together, with a genuine team spirit that's hard to find elsewhere.
Clubs don't survive three decades by accident. They survive because people pour themselves into them, players who become coaches, umpires, organisers, and the kind of teammates who host cheese and wine nights and hot tub socials to keep everyone connected off the pitch.
A Thank You to Linda
We recently said a heartfelt farewell to our coach, Linda, who has spent 30 years with this club as a player, coach, umpire and goalkeeper.
Her message to us summed up our philosophy:
"Focus on the fun, celebrate individual achievement and remember that what you put into a club, it gives back tenfold."
Three decades on, the drama's history and the sticks are lighter - but the team spirit's stronger than ever. Come and join us!
